Get Active Outside This Spring

With winter finally starting to fade away, it's time to welcome spring - the perfect time to add some outdoor activities into your exercise routine.

Exercising outside doesn’t only bring physical benefits. According to a study by the University of Essex, outdoor activities have also been shown to improve a person's self esteem and regulate moods...powerful factors that greatly impact on your mental wellbeing. So if you suffer from the winter blues, working out in the fresh air could make you happier.

Here are four great outdoor physical activities for spring:-

1. Biking: This exercise is wonderful for novices and athletes alike. The intensity can be adjusted to your specific needs, and is easier on the knees compared to running. An added bonus is that it’s also good for the environment compared to making short distances in the car. If you do feel this exercise is for you, be prepared to make a small but important investment such as buying a well-fitted helmet and/or protective gear to keep you safe.

2. Hiking: Now that the snow and ice has (hopefully) melted, it's the perfect time to explore the great outdoors - and there's no better way to do that than by hiking. This exercise will literally challenge every part of your body, including the arms, legs and back. Surprisingly enough, studies also show that people who take their hikes to the woods are less likely to become depressed. This activity is brilliant for both your physical and mental health.

3. Roller skating: Like biking, roller skating is a fabulous way to improve your cardiovascular health, whilst also toning your hamstrings, quads and glutes. It's also less taxing on your knees, making it an effective alternative to stair climbing or running. However, it does require a lot of coordination and so learning how to roller skate can be initially difficult. Yet once you’ve mastered the technique, you’ll have great fun whilst at the same time burning off tons of calories.

4. Walking: Of course, you do it all the time, but taking a brisk 30 minute walk every day could help improve your cardiovascular health. It also doesn’t cost anything as you don’t need any specific equipment, making it an accessible choice regardless of your financial status. Studies also show that it can lower blood pressure and reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes.

So what are you waiting for? Get outside and do some stress busting exercise in a beautiful location to nourish your mind, body and soul.
