Get Double Your Battery Charge With New App

New SleepWell AP claims to double the time between charges on your mobile gadget. Duke University researcher, Justin Manweiler, has figured out a way to double your battery life by managing Wi-Fi signal searching. Manweiler’s innovation, SleepWell AP, gives an efficiency boost to Wi-Fi, which cell phone service providers use for service in some urban areas. It works by rescheduling traffic and coordinating data between access points.

“By carefully modifying the timestamps – as a part of the Wi-Fi clock synchronization process – the SleepWell AP regulates the client’s sleep and wake-up schedules,” said Manweiler. ”Results show a median gain of up to 2x when Wi-Fi links are strong. When links are weak and the network density is high, the gains can be even more.”

Searching for Wi-Fi, 3G, and 4G signals is known to drain battery juice like a vampire drains its victims. According to an article by Jeffrey Van Camp, Digital Trends, “Manweiler found that when there are multiple Wi-Fi access points in range of your phone or device, the device has to be on and transmitting as much as five times as long due to contention between access points.” With multiple Wi-Fi access points available to us practically everywhere we go these days, your device is constantly searching for connection. The search for 4G networks makes the battery drain even faster.

Manweiler’s research paper (Avoiding the Rush Hours: Wi-Fi Energy Management via Traffic Isolation), describes the tests they used for the SleepWell AP. They tested it on 8 laptops and 9 Android phones, evaluating it through a variety of scenarios and traffic patterns (YouTube, Pandora, FTP, and Internet Radio). According to Manweiler, “Results show a median gain of up to 2x when Wi-Fi links are strong; when links are weak and the network density is high, the gains can be even more. We believe SleepWell is a desirable upgrade to Wi-Fi systems, especially in light of increasing Wi-Fi density.”

Standard battery charge on a Smartphone is sadly lacking. Let’s face it. We use our Smartphones like they were pocket computers, and yet we don’t expect our laptop batteries to last all day and all night. Are we asking too much of our cell phone batteries? By the very nature of carrying around a cell phone, most of us don’t want a large, heavy battery to weigh us down. I have written about ways to add life to your charge, (see my blog Tips to Extend Your HTC EVO Battery) but the bottom line is that your Smartphone will suck the battery dry in the matter of a few hours of heavy usage. Of course you can always buy a spare battery for your phone and keep it charged, swapping the two batteries out as needed. Or you can deal with the bulkiness and weight of an extended battery, which is what I chose to do. I love my Droid X extended battery. I usually get about 26-30 hours of charge out of my battery between charges, even with heavy usage. But imagine how long that extended battery will last using Manweiler’s SleepWell AP. I can hardly wait until this app is out on the market. What about you?
