Some rules for getting your ex back are expendable in your situation but there is always one rule that every single couple needs to follow after a break up: cutting off as much contact as is humanly possible with your ex. It doesn’t matter who you are or what the reason was for the break up. If the breakup was serious, you need to take time to heal. Here’s why this is imperative:

Your ex has to learn what her actions resulted in. If she broke it off with you but still expects you to be around such as driving her to work/school and treating her to a few lunches and/or dinners, you have to step up and show her how wrong she is. She should have stayed with you if she wanted all that.

Being friends after a breakup can happen, however, you can’t just go from being in a relationship to being best friends. If you do this, your ex is going to still take advantage of you. She’ll give you the same looks she did before when she pleads for you to take her to the mall. That’s no longer your responsibility as a guy friend. Guys don’t have to play the role of shopping mate to an ex-girlfriend.

If you’re there for her and doing things she asks of you, you’re going to enter a give and take relationship. This means you’ll be giving and she’ll be taking. This will burn you out faster than anything and will make you really unhappy. If you want her to respect you, you need to get away for a time and let her realize how much she wants you in her life.

It’s not always possible to cut off all contact because life hands us different situations. However, with each situation, there are steps of getting away from your ex that will actually bring your ex closer to you.
