When selecting a college you will more than likely choose a place that you can get into. Many high school seniors set their sights high but when they look at the factors that are important to colleges they find that either their test scores, exam scores, or their extracurricular activities fall short. One way around this is to begin looking into colleges early on in your high school career.

Even high school guidance counselors don't do a great job of advising students about this fact in advance. It seems that they wait until around the end of their sophomore year to begin discussing colleges and usually until the end of their junior year to begin applying. By this point most of the water of high school is under the bridge so to speak and due to this many students have already established a pattern of grades and extras that will either please or displease those on a college admissions board.

Many are hoping to go away to the college of their choice but in the current economy there may be other issues beyond acceptance that may be blocking their access to college and one of the biggest issues tends to be financial. For those who are looking for assistance in paying for their education without having to go into major debt due to taking out too many student loans, it is likely that the grades and other marks that they need to meet for additional financial assistance will be even more stringent and the bar will be even higher.

Naturally, most colleges let applicants know right from the admissions catalog what the minimum prerequisites are to get into their particular school and in the current competitive climate, if you want to get into that school of your choice then you should plan not just to meet the minimum requirements but to truly exceed them. Numerous colleges are flooded with applications and they will make a choice of those candidates that they feel stand out based on a variety of different considerations.

It is critical that these college bound high school students begin thinking well in advance about where they are going and what steps they need to take to get where they are going. The colleges clearly outline what is anticipated of incoming freshmen and what the minimum requirements are. If a student really has their heart set on attending a selected college after high school, then they really should look over the requirements and plan according to what the college of their choice will be looking for. This will assist them from receiving that letter of denial and will actually help keep them from scrambling in their junior and senior years.
