Getting Past Public Speaking Anxiety

Do you suffer from public speaking anxiety? Well you're not alone. In fact, most people are afraid to speak in front of an audience. It is considered the most feared thing a person can do. I think the main reason behind this is that people aren't taught public speaking skills when they're children. When you don't know how to do something and there are a lot of people to witness your "mistakes", you get extreme anxiety.

Practice Makes Almost Perfect: Taking the time to practice a speech can really remove some of the anxiety. You can't really control that feeling of a huge audience looking at you, but you can control how well you know the speech. Take the necessary time to practice and practice with a friend or mentor. They can give you positive feedback on how you're doing the speech.

Anticipation Feels The Worse: When you get down to the anxious feelings of public speaking, it isn't the speaking itself, it's just the thought of it. We build it up in our minds before we ever get out there. That is the problem. Like me and I'm sure most of you know, these things don't turn out quite as bad as we anticipate in our head. Always remember that.

The Audience Doesn't See Nervous: The audience can only hear your words and read your body language. When you're walking out on the stage in front of everyone, to a standard applause. The audience doesn't see that you're nervous. You may feel horrible inside, like you're going to be sick, but the audience doesn't see that. I find this takes the edge off and you can really just get down to business.
