In order to fish in public laes, rivers, and streams, in most states you need a fishing license. Children under 16 are not required to purchase one but do check with your local laws. Some sport fishing requires extra tags and children are not exempt.

The fees vary from state to state and are used for upkeep to a lot of the recreational areas, and help pay for stocking fish. Every now and again, states will set a day aside so you can go fishing for free and see whether you really enjoy the fishing experience are not without having to pay for a full year's fishing license.

Make the purchase of your fishing license one of the first things on your list. Keep it visible at all times so the game warden can spot it and know you are legal. Game wardens regularly check the most popular fishing areas and will even show up at ones where you think they're not likely to find you. If you don't have a license, you can be subject to citation and or confiscation of all your fishing equipment.

The type of fishing gear you need, even though it is pretty basic will depend on what kind of fish you're trying to catch. Trout fishing is pretty popular so let's start with that one first.

Start with a rod, reel, hooks, line, sinkers, bait, and a tackle box. You don't have to spend a lot of money, but spend enough to get decent quality fishing gear. This will help make your fishing experience a lot more enjoyable.

Most tackle shops have someone there that has experience and can help you to purchase the best fishing equipment for the type of fish you are going to fish for.

Tackle shops that rent fishing equipment can help you figure out which is the best equipment for your needs after you let them know what kind of fish you are going to catch.

A rod and reel combo is probably the best way to get started. Many companies package these for beginners. There are several companies that make high-quality fishing gear for all spending budgets.
