Getting Up With Alarm Clocks

Many people rely on alarm clocks to get us up on time each morning. However, some people sleep so deeply that they don't hear the alarm and find themselves in trouble at work for being late or missing important appointments. There are some things you can experiment with to see if you can find a solution that works for you.

Many people oversleep because they lose power during the night without realizing it and their alarm does not go off at all. When buying a new alarm clock, be sure it has a battery back-up.

Go to bed each night at the same time and get up in the morning at the same time - even on weekends. Go to bed early enough to get the amount of sleep that your body needs. Although it is tempting to sleep in on your day off, you will find it easier to get up in the morning if you do so at the same time each day.

You can find alarms in a variety of noises. When setting your alarm to a favorite radio station doesn't do the trick, try one that makes a different kind of noise such as a loud ringing or buzzing. You can even find clocks shaped like animals and they mimic animal noises, such as a cow mooing!

Putting your clock somewhere away from your bed will be helpful if you tend to turn off your alarm before being fully awake. You should be able to wake up enough to stay awake if you have to walk across the room to shut it off.

Perhaps the alarm being across the room still doesn't wake you up. Set a second one to go off a few minutes later than the first one. Be sure to choose one with a different sound. The multiple noises going off close together might be enough to waken you.

Sometimes it is easier to wake up when the sun is coming up. There are alarm clocks available that mimic sunshine. They begin by putting out a soft light that grows brighter as time passes.

Try out one or more of the above suggestions to see what works well for you. You'll have peace of mind that you will be in time for your appointments!
