You can get a swept up rod and reel but even a very modest one will be perfectly fine. The fish are very obliging and will hop on anyway.

You can find crappie just about anywhere in North America and can be fished all year round with a particular favourite time being around Christmas. Night fishing is sometimes favoured because light attracts the bait fish which in their turn bring the the old crappies.
