Going Green With Satellite Television

We don’t often associate satellite television and the environmental movement, but interestingly this is an industry with a history of concern and interest in the world. Consider that, unlike the broadband network, the satellite industry requires no running of extensive miles of cable, no need for tons of equipment and raw materials and very little usage of apparatus (such as large trucks and tractors) to get the job done.

A satellite television system utilizes a very fine-tuned array of equipment to create a system. For example, most satellite television providers utilize regional centers that receive their signals from the various stations and networks in the area, these in turn are broadcast to the satellites in outer space which are owned or rented by the providers. These satellites send their signals back down to Earth where they are received by the millions of home dishes. The dishes use their own short runs of cable to send the programming into the customer’s homes.

What does this mean? No digging, no lines strung up anywhere or buried anywhere and very little machinery required. A traditional cable system on the other hand, requires constant maintenance and repair, and still runs into problems due to weather conditions, vehicle accidents and simple mechanical failure.

Additionally, this also means that people can live in as rural an area as they’d like and still receive the top of the line signal that only satellite provides. For example, since its inception, satellite television has been well known for delivering “movie quality” sound and image. Today that has been expanded into its HD (high definition) offerings as well, and satellite is known for easily beating its competitor’s limited number of free or basic HD offerings.

In addition to placing very little demand on the environment, the satellite industry is also an acknowledged leader in “paperless” operations. Most modern businesses understand the importance of convenience, but the satellite companies have taken this to an entirely different level. While offering paperless billing, online and automatic payments and comprehensive websites with full programming schedules for weeks at a time, they also offer financial incentives and rewards for customers who convert to “green” accounts. For example, one provider is known for rewarding clients with a hefty one-time credit simply for signing up for all of their green offerings and opportunities. The satellite companies also make controlling an account from the Internet such an easy and effective thing that they tend to require very little telephone interaction.

Finally, the majority of satellite television providers are also known for their corporate responsibility and citizenship programs that look to improve or enhance the education, emergency preparedness and health of the communities in which their employees and customers live. Clearly this means everywhere…and the satellite companies have been known to do everything from setting up emergency communication centers in areas where hurricanes and devastating wildfires have occurred to providing enormous amounts of educational materials and programming to worthy schools.

Obviously being “green” and concerned about the world in which their customers inhabit is a primary focus of satellite television providers, and this only adds to the value of their services.
