Goldfish have been around for decades now. They have been an integral part of the popular human consciousness and are certainly one of the most popular pet fish. Goldfish are perfect starter fish for anyone trying to start an aquarium. On account of their extensive history, they come in various shapes, sizes and body varieties. Members of the Carp family, Goldfish make brilliant pets as they're hardy and easy to keep as well as quite low-cost. It is easy to keep Goldfish in a simple fish bowl as well as in large aquariums. Goldfish are incredible and exquisite fish.

Sorts of Goldfish

Common Goldfish: As the name suggests, they are the most common sort of goldfish and differ in color with their cousins, the Carp. They come in a variety of colors including Crimson, Orange, White, Yellow and Black.

Black Moor: These Goldfish have crazy eyes and always succeed in freaking me out a little. Also named Dragon Eyes.

Bubble Eye: Ok, this really is another type of fish that grosses me out. These guys have saggy sack like structures hanging from their faces that are stuffed with some type of fluid..

Celestial Eye: This kind of Goldfish seems like it is wearing eyeglasses. Its pupils point upward and it also has a split tail.

Comet: A smaller variety of Goldfish. It looks a good deal like the common Goldfish but with a longer tail plus a smaller body.

Fantail: The fantail goldfish is triangular in form and has a high dorsal fin. It is closely related to the Ryukin variety of Goldfish.

Lionhead: A very gorgeous looking fish. This type of Goldfish has a hood on its head and looks very elegant.

Oranda: This fish also has a hood or a headgrowth that covers its entire face except the eyes.

Telescope Eyed: Yet another Googly eyed species of Goldfish. This one is usually dark in color and does not look much like other Goldfish making it a very weird variety.

Panda Moor: This is one of the weirdest looking Goldfish you will ever see. It has a large split fantail and protruding eyes with a white and black color pattern.

Veiltail: One of my favorite kinds of Goldfish. This fish has a long swishy tail like a Betta and is just beautiful.

Goldfish can exist in ponds, aquariums or smaller fish tanks without problems. The smaller varieties might be kept in a reasonably simple set up. Contrary to widespread beliefs Goldfish have a memory span of three months and respond to both colors and sounds. They lose their fear of humans eventually and can be fed by hand.

In the wild, Goldfish feed on small shrimp and crustaceans but in the home environment they might be given fish food. Overfeeding has always been a problem with Goldfish in particular with children as young people tend to overfeed their fish.

Remember to keep a close watch on the wellbeing of your fish. Watch out for signs of overfeeding or listless behavior and try to discover problems before they get bad. Keep the fish tank away from direct sunlight as modifications in temperature may adversely affect the healh of your fish. Goldfish make great pets.
