Good Reading – Magician: Apprentice
Bows and arrows. That’s right, the entire story is set in a land where everything is possible, from dragons to meeting the goddess of Death. While Midkemia is a rather larger world, most of it is revealed as the entire saga goes on. In the beginning, there are only several large nations – the major Kingdom of the Isles (all main characters live there) and the Empire of Great Kesh. You can generally imagine Midkemia as Europe in the 16th or 17th century, although with much less technology – no gunpowder and blowing stuff (with some exceptions, for example a burning oil which can’t be smothered by water). There are many, many gods, magic is generally accepted (even though feared) and there are several inhuman races – elves, dwarves, goblins or even dragons (believed to be legendary). Plot Summary A young orphan named Pug shows a little bit of magic skills by accident and is thus chosen to study at the local court’s magician, Kulgan in the duchy of Crydee. His closest buddy Tomas follows his dream and enters the local military service. After the boys discover a wrecked ship near Crydee’s harbor, the events speed up a little – it turns out that the ship was from an alien world and the aliens (named Tsurani) choose to invade the Kingdom of the Isles, basically for two reasons: * the Tsurani culture considers dying in battle as the highest of honors * they also suffer from lack of metal, so it’s also a bit of a resource war After having a small romance with the Duke’s daughter, Carline, Pug embarks with Tomas and several other people to notify the king about the invasion and to get some backup. He first loses Tomas in a mine and even later is captured by Tsurani soldiers and transported to their world, Kelewan. Meanwhile, Tomas escapes an ancient evil creature in the mine and founds a dying dragon, who rewards him with a unique armor – it used to belong to a god-like creature who ruled the world a long time ago, called the Valheru. Tomas ends up in the Elven forest Elvandar and proves himself to be a very valuable warrior – although not entirely himself and also with a crush on the Elven queen, Aglaranna. MPB Rating * 8.5 out of 10 First of all, you should know that Magician: Apprentice is just the first of like 40 books that have been written about Midkemia (an immediate follow-up is Magician: Master, actually they tend to be together in one book, especially in the US/UK). I read all those books over and over again and although there is a definite decline in quality lately, I can do nothing but recommend it. Thank you for reading!
