Good Reasons To Scout During The Summer

There's nothing quite like going out and scouting during the summer months when the mountains are as green as they can be, the birds are chirping and the animals are out and about.

Most sportsmen know that the deer and elk change their habits when the hunts start so the animal's habits that you witness during the summer will almost always be different during the months of hunting season due to the rut and hunting pressure.

However finding the animals in their normal hang outs during the summer months is very important. Once you know where they're living they usually don't stray too far unless a predator or people enter their area and spook them out.

I've found some of my best honey holes during the summer months. Animals are always more relaxed and less spooky during the summer months and tend to present themselves out in the open more often. Hence the reason bow hunters in the west tend to see more animals than rifle hunters, their hunt starts in August.

I can still remember when I found my elk honey hole way up in the hills in probably the nastiest place man has ever dared venture before. It took a lot of summer scouting and trial and error but I was able to find a place where I'm almost always certain to harvest an elk every year if I put the time in. Getting the time off for the entire hunt is another story all in it's own.

Another great benefit to summer scouting is the exercise and strength you get from it. If you live next to the Rockies like I do than you know full well that if you're not in shape than you're hunting experience will be horrible and you'll be doing more road hunting and recovery than actually out hunting.

So my advice to everyone is go out and get your summer scouting in. Summer is half over so go out now and enjoy every minute of it before the snow hits.

Be safe and good hunting my friends.
