Good Website Design Practices

A good web site design basically has to satisfy three main factors. One is the technical aspects related to the web site design. The second one is the functional aspects related to the web site design and the third one is the security aspects related to the web site design.

With respect to the technical design considerations, there are certain important considerations that need to be given. First is the browser over which the web site application will be rendered. In the last few years, there have been quite a few newer browsers that have hit the market. There is Google Chrome, Apple Safari and the constantly upgrading versions of FireFox. Then there is the good old Internet Explorer. So, a website designer has to give consideration to all the browsers and ensure that the web application gets rendered over any of these browsers. Thorough testing has to be performed to find out whether the designed web application has the capacity to be rendered over multiple browsers.

The next technical aspect to be considered is the screen resolution. If the web site is designed for a resolution higher than the standard 1024*768 pixels, then the website cannot be rendered on monitors with other lower resolutions. The website designer also needs to take into account accessing the internet from smart mobile phones and design the resolution accordingly.

The other important factor is related to the download speeds. The download speeds will vary drastically from user to user. Hence when performing the web site design, one should not fill the pages with high resolution video clips and images, which take a longer time to download
From the functional perspective, the designer has to ensure that the web site pages follow a consistent theme and when the users navigate from one page to the next, they should feel that the navigation aspects are uniform across the web pages. The designer should also give focus to the visual aspects such as the color, graphics, font and the placement of images in the web page. The web page layout should be consistent across all the pages of the web site. The placement of the external links and transition stages from page to the next should be uniform across all the pages. In order to obtain this consistency and still quickly complete the design, the designer can make use of the standard templates that are available in the market place.
