Graduation Dresses In Chinese Universities

Graduation Dresses were originated in Europe. But nowadays it is used worldwide. It has become a passion and symbol of convocation ceremony. Asian countries are now using these dresses as a formality. China is not different from them. Graduation Dresses are thoroughly used in every university in China. This has become so common that this is now considered an academic dress. It is said that graduation dresses are originated in Europe, but China has a long history of using graduation dresses. It will not be a surprise if someday somebody proves the origin of graduation dresses in China.

Graduation Dresses are being used from the ancient times in China. Officialdom was the base of these ancient graduation dresses. These dresses were given by an examination that was called imperial civil-service examinations. These dresses were their traditional dress. They used their traditional style and clothes in those dresses. Graduation Dresses were a part of China’s education system. But nowadays the graduation dresses used in China are influenced by the western culture. Sometimes American style is also followed. The education system of China had a very deep connection with its officialdom. They used to choose their best employees from their education system. So, they tried to train their people from the beginning of the education system. As a result, graduation dresses became an essential part of their official process. Graduation Dresses in China are quite different from the other country’s graduation dresses. These dresses are made with a long round collar robe which is of red color. Long sleeves are used in these dresses that are called paning lanshan in Chinese. A traditional cap is used that is called putou in Chinese. This cap is black and has some curved wings. This dress is China’s old traditional graduation dress. Nowadays, in some traditional institutions, these dresses are used. But most of the universities are now using the western style graduation dresses. These dresses are completely different from the ancient China graduation dresses. A standard of graduation dresses was set in 1994. Graduates wear gowns that are closed in the front side. The gowns are colored according to the level of degree. Black gowns are used for bachelors, blue gown is for masters, and scarlet black combination gown is used for doctorate degree holders. Mortarboard is used in these dresses that are of American style. Officers wear all red robes in the ceremony. They also wear golden bands to distinguish from general students. Graduation Dresses will be used in the future also for preserving the tradition of convocation ceremony in China.
