Graduation Dresses are called talar in Germany. It is originated from a Latin word called talare. It means to the ankles. These dresses are long black gown with wide sleeves that are also used in Europe and America. Germans have a long history of using such kind of dresses. You have to look back to the middle ages to know the history. Scholars used to wear different and common dresses always in the middle ages. Later, these dresses were used in German Supreme Court. In the middle ages, students usually not wore graduation dresses. Graduation Dresses were only worn by professors, rectors, deans, and other faculty members. But students were not happy in this. They wanted a specific dress for them also. As a result, a revolution occurred and the rule was changed. A specific dress was fixed for students also. This was a great achievement of German students against discrimination. Each university used their own color and design in graduation dresses. It is a different tradition from Europe and Western culture. In England and America almost all universities use the same graduation dress in their convocation ceremony. Graduation Dresses of German universities are not completely black. They have bright red, yellow or green stripes in the middle of the dresses. These dresses look so good when German students wear them in the ceremony. The ceremony becomes like an army parade when all students wear the same dresses delivered to them. All people attend the ceremony with the dresses. In Malaysia, most of the universities use their traditional dress as their graduation dress, which is called Songet. It is a very special type of dress that is made with complete Malaysian tradition. This is a dress that is decorated very gorgeously. Sometimes gold is used for the decoration. This dress is only produced in Malaysia and Indonesia. Indonesian universities also use these dresses.
