Grape Growing Guide
Determine the Type of grape That Grows Well in Your Area Every area has different conditions, and not all grapes grow well in all areas. This is why it’s important to determine the climate and growing season in your area and find grape varieties that can adapt well. Some grapes can stand more extreme temperatures than other types. You can get advice from a nursery about what grapes will grow better in your climate, as well as what types to stay away from. Pick a Type Many people choose to grow grapes to make their own wine. There are also other grapes that are designed to make jams and fruits. Decide what you want to make or use the grapes for and this can narrow down your choices a little bit. Pick a Spot You are going to have to pick out a place to begin planting your vineyard. You are going to need an adequate amount of space, and you also need to make sure the area you choose has good drainage to prevent the water from drowning your vines. Keep in mind that each grape vine you plant will need at least 6 to 8 feet before another one is planted. The more vigorous a grape type is, the more space they are going to need. Take a Look at Your Soil Having the proper soil is key in ensuring your vineyard is healthy and will grow. You need to make sure the soil you have is prepared properly as there are different levels that the soil need to be at before you can begin planting. Your soil needs to be acidic and should have a pH level of at least 5.0 to 6.5. Set up a Schedule When keeping up with your vineyard, keeping the soil moist is another important factor. You should keep your vines watered especially if they are smaller. Water them at least one time each week, and depending on the weather conditions in your area, this may need to be increased. As your grapes and vines begin to grow, you can reduce the amount of times a week you water them. Pruning Pruning your vineyard can be time consuming, however, it’s important to do in order to maintain and upkeep your vines. Pruning your vines is a great way to train them to grow more fruit and not giving up the quality and taste of them. Doing these few things as well as others not mentioned, you can ensure that your vineyard will be on its way to being healthy and fruitful over the years.
