Great Hotels At Reasonable Prices - How To Find Them
Everyone will tell you that the best time of the year to find bargains on hotels is during the off season, but who wants to visit a beach when it's cold? You certainly can't go skiing in the summer when the snow starts melting. This advice isn't always the best if you want to experience good weather and enjoy the outdoors. A smarter way to still save money as well as see some sunshine (or snow if that's your taste) is to pick the shoulder season, travel mid week, or visit the first few days following a three-day weekend or other holiday. The shoulder season is the first few weeks before or after the big rush of tourists. The weather during this time is generally good depending on the region, but there may be a greater chance of a few bad days. Mid week is another good bet if you can get the time off. Big party spots that get slammed over New Year's, Easter, or Independence Day will be absolutely dead quiet the week after, which is perfect for those seeking a mellower vibe. Internet search engines still rein king for finding the lowest room prices. It also makes comparing different hotels a snap. Some sites, however, are clearly better than others. Take your time to do a search on several different sites and take notes. Be careful because some require a bit of clicking before you actually receive a final cost that includes all taxes. When you've narrowed down your choices, check the company website and look for any special offers they may be having. You might get a better rate by booking directly and taking advantage of a discount rather than using an aggregator website. Another method that few people use is directly asking the front desk for a reduction. Even if you don't get what you asked for, they're likely to throw a few freebies your way. Watch out for hidden charges which are becoming more commonplace across the board. Some hotels will charge additional fees that are not included in the room quote. To make matters worse, these fees are often not disclosed until check-in, or may even be charged on your credit card without your knowledge. They are often masked as "resort" fees, surcharges, phone hookup, gratuity, baggage storage, towel rental—you name it and they will charge it. Always call the front desk and inquire about any of these before booking so you won't get any nasty surprises. Don't trust a website that insists the total is "all-inclusive."
