Green And Pleasant Recycling Announce 15,000 Tonne Anaerobic Digestion Plant

The £1.5m project is currently undergoing the final stages of planning permission at Cornwall Council, and will involve the construction of three part-buried digestion tanks, in order to process local food waste, as well as 8,000 tonnes a year of farm waste from the Bocaddon site.

When complete in Spring 2011, the plant is expected to produce 350-400kw/h electricity and 500kw/h heat – enough electricity to power 200 homes. The digester will also provide power and heat to both the farm and local businesses, including a proposed holiday cottage business and a holiday home for disabled children.

Green and Pleasant will use the Norwegian Biowaz AS and Bristol based Bioplex digester technologies in the construction of the plant, in order to reduce costs, accelerate the digestion process and improve efficiency.

Green and Pleasant Recycling managing director Julian Maiklem said: “The National Farmers Union reckons there’s room for 1,000 digesters on farms in the UK, we actually think there’s room for more, but we think that’s a realistic figure. And we would like to see as many of those digesters as possible combining farm waste and biodegradable waste.

“It’s better for the community, it engages local people within the community, money stays in the community, and we save carbon because we’re not shifting waste up and down Britain’s motorways in big lorries. It really is win, win, win.”
