Guide To Hearing Treatments For Hearing Problems

A lot of people take their sense of hearing for granted believing that it will never go away. Unfortunately, people can lose their hearing and a person doesn't even have to be well advanced in years. It is of prime importance then to check out the causes and reasons that cause hearing disorders and how these could be treated.

Aside from other abnormalities, babies are more at risk of getting hearing loss than anything else. It also doesn’t matter how old you are as both children and adults are susceptible to losing their hearing. Some of the other causes are trauma, noise pollution and being sick with another disease.

Environmental noise that is loud and beyond normal decibel levels can cause a person to lose his or her hearing. An airport worker such as a runway assist personnel are regularly subjected to extreme levels of noise. On a smaller scale, using power tools like drills and cutters and not wearing protective hearing equipment can also cause damage.

A doctor usually uses hearing aids to treat different kinds of hearing impairment. There is also no shortage in the kinds of hearing aids available as there are at the least 10 different classifications. In the end, a hearing aid is still just a tiny amplifier worn, that essentially collects then amplifies the surrounding sound to the user.

The hearing aid's type is determined only by where the tiny electro acoustic device is worn. There is the BTE or behind the ear aids which consist of a case, a tube and an ear mold and are placed where else but just behind the ear. The main advantage of using the BTE type of device is it is worn outside the ear so moisture, earwax does not impact the whole device only the earpiece which can be replaced at a substantially lower price than the whole device.

Another type of hearing aid is what is called a bionic ear which is basically an inner ear or cochlear implant. The only way to install the implant is by surgery as the device is needed to be placed behind the target ear and underneath the scalp. The cochlear implant works by picking up sounds and speech, then converting these into tiny electronic impulses that are sent through electrodes to nerves that are connected to our brains, which our brain can distinguish as sound.

The parts of the cochlear implant are a microphone that picks up sound, a speech processor which filters audible speech, a transmitter which sends signals, a receiver and stimulator which converts signals into electric impulses and an array of electrodes that send the impulses to the nerves connected to the brain. The costs to getting one of these implants are off the roof and the only way to get one is in a developed country. A person's hearing history, health and other issues need to be checked as well to see if the person is qualified for such an operation.

In a few years patients may not need mechanical replacements or hearing aids, as there might be a new technology called gene therapy. Gene therapy allows anyone to regrow their damaged cochlea cells to ensure compatibility. Being years away, a person cannot yet hope that gene therapy is the answer to their problems.

Hearing treatments are the worst case scenarios in dealing with unavoidable hearing loss. Each hearing treatment available have their own pros and cons and only a specialist or doctor familiar with the technology and science can know for sure. Life just isn’t the same when you can’t hear a thing.
