Gus Hansen - “the Great Dane”

Gustav Hansen (also known as Gus “The Great Dane” Hansen) lives in Monaco. Each day he wakes up like everybody else, eats breakfast as everybody else and brushes his teeth like everybody else, but besides that he’s a totally different person compared to anybody else.

He was born outside Copenhagen, Denmark in 1974 and when he was young he said to himself: “Hey, I want to play backgammon and become professional.” His friends probably thought that he was insane, and today that thought still remains among his competitors, however it’s not his backgammon competitors because he quit backgammon and began playing poker instead in 1990’s.

Today we all know Gus Hansen as the poker champion he really is. He has over $7.1 billion in career tournament earnings and his resume also tells that he has won four WPT titles and that nobody, but him has done this before, and in 2007 he won the Aussie Millions Main Event.

Gus Hansen was introduced to poker in the beginning of 1990’s and in 1996 he played his first WSOP and got eliminated in the first round. This didn’t affect him and he wanted to learn more about poker and therefore he abandoned his backgammon and decided to focus on poker. And 6 years later he moved to Las Vegas and began his career as professional poker player.

In 2003, Gus Hansen founded an online poker site called pokerchamps.com, with some partners. This was an economical success for Gus Hansen who sold pokerchamps.com to the British company, Betfair, for approximately $15 million, but Gus Hansen is still active online. In 2007 he launched a poker community called ThePlayr. This community included a blog by Gus Hansen, articles about poker, a poker forum, lots of strategies and a “Gus Tracker” which told where Gus where playing.

Gus Hansen was not done making additional online services, because in February 2009 he launched GusHansenTV, which is a free online poker channel starring Gus himself. On GusHansenTV he gives advice about how to improve your poker play and become better. The launch of the broadcast though, was quite unique. Gus Hansen considers himself as a professional gambler, and he once made a bet against another Danish professional poker player, Theo Joergensen about who was the best boxer, so GusHansenTV’s launch featured a boxing fight between Gus Hansen and Theo Joergensen. Despite the fact Gus Hansen is a former tennis champion, he couldn’t win against Theo Joergensen, so Gus Hansen lost his bet and got humiliated on his own TV Channel on the launching date.

When Gus Hansen isn’t competing against other poker players in tournaments or at the high stakes table in Las Vegas, he doesn’t go to work like everybody else would do. Gus likes to play poker at Full Tilt Poker and he’s also one of the members of Team Full Tilt, which is a team that promotes Full Tilt Poker and includes other professional poker players, such as Phil Ivey and Chris Ferguson. Despite that, Gus Hansen also tries to get new players to play at Full Tilt Poker by giving them a full tilt poker referral code so new members can sign up and get their first deposit back 100% after they’ve earned enough points. Gus Hansen also attends in commercials for Full Tilt Poker.

Regularly, Gus Hansen plays at the “Big game” at Bellagio and he makes frequent appearances on television. On GSN high stakes poker in 2006, he beat Daniel Negreanu for a $575,700 pot, which is the current record on the show. Besides he provides poker commentary for Danish and American television, and actually he joined, in 2008, the commentary team on World Series of Backgammon on Eurosport, so he hasn’t been capable of forgetting the whole backgammon thing he abandoned in 1996.
