Halloween Parties In Calgary, 2009

Autumn is definitely my favourite season here in Calgary. The leaves are turning, it’s not too hot to go outside, but it’s not so cold that you have to stay indoors either. Of course, the fall season is almost over now. Most of the trees have dropped their leaves, it’s already snowed several times, and there’s just a hint of winter in the wind. However, before fall is over there is one huge event left before winter moves in and takes over for the next eight months. I’m talking about All Hallow’s Eve, of course. It’s October 23rd, just nine days away from the spookiest, most exploited pagan holiday of all time and if you don’t have any plans yet you are definitely behind the game. I know I am. I’ve been trying to decide which party to go to, what to wear, etc, etc. This is a bit of an issue for me. In my capacity as Guest Relations Coordinator here at Nuvo Hotel Suites I’ve been getting a lot of our long-term guests asking for advice on where to go, where’s a good place to get a costume, so on, and so forth. So, over the last few days I’ve developed a system to help our guests make that ever-so-important decision ‘What am I going to do for Halloween?’

The first thing you need to decide is what kind of venue you want to attend. Do you want to go to a club, a lounge, a pub, or something completely different? There’s quite the plethora of events going on this Halloween weekend, and many of them are a little bit out of the ordinary. You don’t have to just stick to one venue, either. Hopping on board the Halloween Howler Club Crawl is a great way to see a lot of different clubs, pubs and lounges all around the city without having to worry about being stuck as the designated driver. This year the Howler is going to be making stops at The Whiskey, The Roadhouse, Vinyl Retro Dance Lounge, Mile One Tavern, and the SoHo. This promises to be a high-energy, screaming good time.
If you’re in the market for something a little less gong-showy there’s some great events going on at a number of different lounges. The Vin Room is having a ‘Yelloween’ celebration on Oct 31st, and other lounges that are running Halloween parties include Snatch Rock N Roll Lounge, Plush Lounge, Tangerine Supperclub, Amsterdam Rhino, and Belgo. These are places where you can dress up as something with a modicum of class, like a vampire or Sherlock Holmes, and enjoy the evening without having to worry too much about someone throwing up all over your costume.

If you’re not on board for the club crawl, but you still want something with a bit more verve than a lounge party there are still a lot of options for the discerning ghoul. Every club that is not involved in the club crawl will be throwing their own Halloween parties and there’s certainly something for everyone in this list that includes Habitat, Tantra, Cowboys, Roadhouse, The Back Alley Nightclub, The Loft Niteclub, Club Nirvana, and the Hoodoo Nightclub. With more energy than a lounge, but less chaos than a club crawl, heading out to celebrate the occasion at one of these clubs can be a happy medium for a lot of Halloween’ers.
But, wait! There’s still more going on. The Chinese Cultural Centre is throwing the Voodoo Halloween Gala 2009. There’s an open-air party going down at Olympic Plaza, and the Jack Singer Concert Hall is having a big Halloween bash as well. These events are great for anyone who’s a little tired of the bar scene and wants to try something a little different this year. Now that you know your options you can decide what your costume is going to be. However, for that one you’re on your own.
