Hang Out With Your Readers Before You Write

How much do you know about your target readers?

To write a successful book, you need to be crystal clear on the characteristics of your perfect readers and their needs. It also helps if you can weave in stories and examples to illustrate your key points.

The easiest way to collect this information is to spend time face to face with a group of your target readers. Attend a conference, go to a local networking meeting, visit an organization or participate in a community event.

You don't have to make this a formal process. Just find places where your readers congregate and spend some time there. While you are with your target readers, engage in conversation about your book topic in a casual setting.

Try to learn the answers to these questions:

What are some of the challenges of being a ****? Fill in the blank with parent, business person, retiree, etc.
Do you have a lot of stress? What helps you cope?
What makes you enjoy being a ***?
What have you learned?
What does success as a **** mean to you?
For example, here's some of the interesting things I learned at the ICF conference:

Many coaches want to write a book but think they don't have time.
Many coaches are struggling financially and seeking new ways to make money.
Successful coaches are really busy and often stressed.
New coaches are overwhelmed by all the demands of entering the profession and concerned about marketing.
International coaches have a less crowded marketplace but struggle to educate their customers about coaching and personal development as a whole.
The super stars of the coaching world have a wealth of knowledge. Some have entered the field of information marketing but not everyone sees potential in what they know.
I learned all these things in a few days of friendly conversation. I was so inspired that I am writing a new book specifically based on this information.

What can you learn in casual conversation with your target readers?

Try it and be ready for inspiration to strike!
