Hanuman - Much Venerated God
Popular temples dedicated to Lord Hanuman are Sri Anjaneyar Temple in Ambur, Jakhu temple in Shimla and Sankat Mochan Temple in Varanasi. Another temple in Trinidad, the 'Dattatreya Temple' has a Hanuman statue with a height of 85 feet. Anjaneya was born to 'vanaras' or a 'monkey-like race'. He met Lord Rama when the king was serving his exile in the forest and consequently helped him save goddess Sita from the kingdom of Ravana. He , without taking any help from others, helped Lakshman get back his life, bringing 'Sanjeevani' by carrying the 'Gandhamadan' mountain. That is the reason why Hindus worship his courage and might. He is also known for his fondness and regard for Lord Rama. There are many shrines with statue of Hanuman next to Lord Rama indicating his faithful service. Hanuman Jayanti is observed every year in the month of 'chaitra' that falls between March and April per the western calendar. Fasts are observed and people throng to temples to offer their prayers to the god. Devotees chant a special prayer to Lord Anjaneya called 'chalisa', which has 40 verses. In addition worshippers wear red or saffron colored clothes and bands on wrists. Legend says, Hanuman asked Sita why she was wearing sindhur on the forehead; she responded that it symbolizes Lord Rama's long life. He is then reported to have coated his whole body with sindhur for Lord Rama's long life. Hanuman is believed to be an eternal God by his worshippers and is said to be alive in caves, chanting the name of Lord Ram.
