Havana Book Fair Ready To Be Held In February
This year's fair will be dedicated to the cultures of the Greater Caribbean and highly recognised Cuban intellectuals and writers Ambrosio Fornet, 2009 Literature National Award, and Zoila Lapique, 2000 Publication National Award. According to Edel Morales, Deputy Head of International Relations of the Cuban Book Institute, several promising young writers included in the selection of "Latin America's 25 Best Kept Secrets", from the Fair of Guadalajara, Mexico, are also expected to travel to Havana. "More than 100 exhibitors, including 44 foreigners, have already confirmed their presence to the major literary event in Cuba", Morales said. "Cuban publishing houses will launch 46 titles by Caribbean authors, dealing with the material and spiritual culture in the Caribbean region". The Havana Book Fair will include colloquiums and workshops on the Caribbean and on legendary Argentine-Cuban guerrilla leader Ernesto Che Guevara, as well as an encounter of rising talented young writers from the subcontinent and its islands. As it has happened in previous years, this international book event will take place at San Carlos de La Cabana Fortress, one of Havana's oldest colonial citadels where travellers can see the spectacular 9-o'clock sharp cannon ceremony in the evening during their Cuba holidays, as one of the city's oldest traditions from colonial times. The Havana Book Fair, since its inception in 1982, has been considered the most important event of the literary movement in Cuba. It has been offering a room for participation and exchange to all entities and professionals linked to the publishing world. In addition, the Book Professional Room belonging to the Book Cuban Chamber will be opened as a meeting place to writers, publishers, booksellers and book suppliers, and will also function as a communication and information centre for the fair. Eduardo Fernandez Collado, General Director of Cuba's Book Fair, invites all the personalities from around the world related to the publishing sector and the literary and artistic creation to travel to Cuba to form part of a unique meeting of literature and arts.
