Have A Happy New Year In Mallorca

Whether they are looking forward to a sensational Spanish fiesta or want to hold a gathering of loved ones in a relaxed and comfortable setting, opting to welcome in the new year in Mallorca is sure to be a memorable experience for holidaymakers.

Although mid-winter is often a time of year associated with cold temperatures, the island's Mediterranean climate means that even a visit in late December should be pleasantly warm. In fact, visitors may wish to spend the last few hours of the year - and the first ones of the new one - celebrating on the beach, something they are unlikely to be able to do back home.

However, those after authentic Mallorquin traditions should look to head to the Le Sue cathedral in Palma.

Every December 31st, the cathedral hosts a stunning fiesta - the Festa de l'Estendard - marking King James I of Aragon's conversion of Palma to Christianity in the early 13th century. With dancing, music and colourful costumes, locals and visitors alike are sure to be enthralled by the spectacle. Once the festivities are over, a special service is held inside the church.

Another popular Spanish way of bringing in the new year is the eating of 12 grapes as the clock hits midnight. As the bell strikes 12 times, it is thought to be good luck to eat a grape in time with each ring.

The practice dates back to the early 20th century and is thought to have originated in Alicante, where grape growers believed it was an effective way to use up the surplus of fruit they often had at the end of the year. It has since spread throughout Mallorca and the rest of Spain.

Upon the eating of the grapes, revellers often embrace one another and raise a glass of wine or champagne as they celebrate in the island's many bars, clubs or restaurants.

Of course people may wish to carry on the festivities well into the early hours of January 1st and opting to stay in luxury farmhouses could be the ideal way to do this. With such farmhouses containing a whole host of modern appliances and features, visitors will find it easy to make their new year celebrations in Mallorca one to remember.
