Having Parrots As Pets

Several people think about having parrots as pets. That’s because a parrot can make a good pet as you can spend several boring evenings amazed by its brilliant colors, tricks and intelligence. But how do you know if you have made a good choice of having a parrot as a pet? A parrot should be able to adapt to you and vice-versa. It is not very difficult to gauge if you can keep a parrot as a pet. A few basics will tell you if a parrot is suitable for your home.

Parrot is a common term used for a particular species of birds but there are a lot of varieties of parrots to choose from – macaws, parakeets, cockatiels and cockatoos to name a few. They also vary according to the size. It is very important to provide a lot of space for the parrot, no matter what species it belongs to. Most of us think that having a parrot as a pet is just about having a cage hanging somewhere in the house . However, that’s not true with every parrot. Even if it has to be a cage, a parrot loves a spacious cage with enough play area. A huge bird like a Macaw will no doubt look good in your living room with its vibrant colors but it should have enough moving space inside the cage. A smaller parrot-kind needs a smaller cage.

Unlike with dogs, parrots and babies do not gel well. Big parrots are known to have broken baby fingers as easily as they crack nuts. So if you have a baby around, think twice before going in for a parrot pet. Parrots also make shrieking noises. They also tend to make loud ear piercing noises which can be quite disturbing for babies and elderly people in the house. Parrots also need to be allowed some flying time out in the open. Other pets like a cat or a dog might harm the parrot in case you have these pets as well. All these little things should be considered before deciding on keeping a parrot as a pet.

If you are a working adult and spend long time at work or travel a lot, then a parrot is probably not the right pet for you. Parrots demand attention if you have them as pets. A parrot becomes emotionally attached to its owner and needs more than a weekend companion. Consider having a parrot pet only if you are able to spend quality time with it and can be around when it has to be let out of the cage. A parrot’s cage needs a good cleaning at least once a week, apart from daily cleaning of the leftovers. They need to be provided fresh food and water daily. Having parrots as pets also requires cleaning of their feathers and other maintenance activities which are time consuming.

Lastly, it is the cost of having a part that has to be considered. This cost is more or less dependent on the size of parrot you prefer. All in all, parrots as pets can be great if you have all the time and patience to deal with them.
