A headache is a pain sensed in the nerves and muscles of the head and neck, as well as the meninges (the membranous coverings of the brain and spinal cord). With a migraine, a person might have sensory symptoms 10 to 30 minutes before an attack; seeing flashing lights, zig-zag lines, blind spots and numbness; or tingling in the face or hands. Other symptoms may also include a disturbed sense of smell, taste, or touch feeling. When the headache does not clearly fit into one of the recognized primary headache syndromes, or when typical symptoms or signs are present, then further investigations are justified.

Tension headaches are the most common type of primary headache; as many as 90% of adults have had or will have tension headaches. Many people with chronic tension headaches have usually had the headaches for more than 60-90 days. It was thought that tension headaches were mainly caused by tension that builds up in the scalp and neck muscles as a result of stress, depression, anxiety, or a head injury.

Treatments for headaches have come a long way since prehistoric times,when healers (who doubled as magicians and priests)-- and later the Egyptians-- performed a kind of brain surgery we called trepidation today. You may find that medicines, making lifestyle changes, and home treatment methods can prevent or reduce the pain. Home treatment methods, such as doing relaxation exercises and using cold packs, also might help ease your pain.
