A pain referred to as a headache is confined to the area above the eyes and ears, or in the back of the neck. A headache, as with most pains, can have many causes. Headaches are classified as primary or secondary. Primary headaches are those not associated with other health conditions. Migraine, tension, and cluster headaches are considered primary. Headaches caused by other health conditions are considered secondary. The associated condition could be either major or minor.
Tension is the most common primary headache and nearly 90% of all adults experience tension headaches. Woman are more prone to tension headaches than men. Migraines are the second most frequent of primary headaches. Migraines can affect children as well as adults. Prior to puberty, boys and girls are both affected by migraine headaches. However, after puberty, women will tend to have them more frequently than men. Migraines are often misdiagnosed as sinus headaches.
The cluster headache is rare and usually affect only men. Cluster headaches sometimes begin in childhood but primarily affect men between the age of 28 and 30.
There are many conditions that can lead to secondary headaches. These conditions can range from severe such as brain tumors, strokes, meningitis and hemorrhages to common conditions such as withdrawal from caffeine or medications. Sometimes people will suffer from a combination headache. This can happen when a secondary headache triggers a migraine.
Treatment depends on the type and severity of the headache as well as the age and the health condition of the patient.
