Health Insurance Buying Guide
The first category of health insurance is indemnity plans, which are also commonly referred to as fee for service plans. Policyholders are able to use virtually any medical provider and the professional is then paid a set fee for the service. In the event that a particular doctor or facility will not accept the plan, the policyholder can pay out of pocket and be reimbursed by the insurance company. The deductibles and co-pays in this type of plan are typically somewhat higher than in other types of health insurance, primarily because of the ability to choose almost any provider. Managed care plans are the other category of health insurance programs and consist of HMOs and PPOs. A health maintenance organization (HMO) has a network of doctors that an insured must choose from. A primary care physician is solely responsible for an individuals medical treatments and any specialists can only be seen if they are referrals. The out of pocket costs, deductibles, and co-pays are typically the lowest in this type of plan. A preferred provider organization (PPO) also has a network of doctors, but will also cover expenses incurred by visiting doctors outside of the network. The co-pays are typically fairly low when visiting providers in the network, and will be higher if using out of network providers. Each individual has their own specific needs and purposes for health insurance, so it is impossible to state which of the three programs are the best choice. Many health insurance companies offer multiple options and various programs that have a variety of co-pays, deductibles, limitations, and even premiums. Before comparing any policies, it is imperative that an individual understand the jargon associated with the health care industry. Any plans that are compared should be done so on level ground and should be of like kind. Many rules depend on the state as well, so it is never a bad idea to contact the state department of insurance for advice and specific regulations. Although most individuals are afraid that they will be unable to afford health insurance, the reality is that many programs are quite affordable. As with any other type of purchase it is often necessary to shop around to obtain the best deal. Comparing multiple quotes online is an excellent way to receive great coverage at a bargain. With all of the options that are available, any consumer is sure to find some type of appropriate health insurance.
