This corporation issued a report recently stating that the average cost of a family health insurance policy has reached an astounding $15,000. In 2011 alone, this represents a 9% spike in premiums. The cost of insurance has outpaced wages according to the New York Times and this has put an even tighter financial squeeze on the middle class. As usual the insurance companies are quick to defend these increased premium prices and higher profits by claims that their costs will increase shortly after a economic recovery. However, for now, the demand for health care is down as well as insurance company payouts all due to the recession. People are just too uncertain about the economy and their financial standing to have elective treatments and routine preventive care done.

Along with the increase in premium costs the new trend is requiring that employees be responsible for a larger percentage of the total cost of their health care. This double down hand not only increases the policies with higher deductibles but with higher co-pays as well. In comparison to the GNP or ( gross national product) in 1960 hovered around 5.2% of the average American's health care expense. This small amount has sharply risen to a health care cost of 17% of the US GNP and this is cause for alarm by any standards of measurement.

Warren Buffet, the Wall Street financial Guru has publicly ask the Congress to bring the cost of health care under control, comparing it to a tapeworm that is feasting on the American economic body according to the Reuters News Service. Health Care Savings account plans is giving some relief, but it isn't enough to give a much needed boost to the economy or the middle class who's pockets and savings are emptying fast. These savings plans were designed to help pay for medical care costs by being pre-taxed accounts, but even that is only putting a band aid on an severe gash a.k.a. as the inefficient American system. The sad fact is that much of the money spend on care is funneled to the administrative and advertising sectors and actually contribute nothing to improve the quality of practicing medicine.

In terms of life expectancy and infant mortality quality, when compared with other industrialized and developed countries around the world, the United States compares poorly and pays much more for health care. Health care professionals report that this is because the gap in coverage leads to fewer preventive treatments. The less people have to spend, they have to choose where they will spend less money and health care is the first to be put on hold or suspended unless the health issues become life threatening and can no longer be ignored. This is also a reason why the cost of medical care for this segment of the population is on the increase.

People with the more serious medical conditions that are more serious because they just couldn't afford preventive care earlier on, plus the administrative inefficiency waste has plagued the American health care system with higher cost and is draining the economy before our very eyes.
