Anyone who lives in an area that has mosquitos has probably used or is contemplating using heartworm treatment for Dogs. It is the most effective way to ensure that your Dog stays completely free from heartworms. There are a number of different products available to use and each has its own merits. The generic brands have the same active ingredients as the more well known brands but are considerably cheaper. Whatever brand you choose to use they most be given monthly. There are tablets or liquids that are applied externally but each performs the function of stopping the worms from growing to adulthood. It is these adult worms that pose a considerable risk to your Dogs health.

It is much better to control them from the start than have to go to the considerable expense of treating for adult worms in Dogs. The treatment for this is considerable and your pet will be allowed little to no exercise for weeks after it has been treated. Give a monthly dose to prevent this happening. If mosquitoes are a year round problem then it is advised to treat every month of the year. If they are definitely only a problem for a few months of the year then you can treat for a month either side of the time when they are present.
