Heating Options For Your Home

Most people need heating of some kind in their homes, and this has traditionally been wood or coal based. The only trouble with this method is that it causes pollution in the atmosphere. These days there are many heating options that are more environmentally friendly.

- Passive solar heating is when the home is designed and positioned to make the most use of sunlight for heating. There still needs to be another method for cloudy days and for nights.
- Active solar heating pumps the warm air from between roof and ceiling and circulates it throughout the home.
- Hydronic heating is that which still uses coal or gas, but it heats water, which is then pumped through pipes into radiators.
- Ducted heating comes from wiring under the floor. This heating is mostly powered by gas. It is efficient and cheap to install and run.
- Gas heaters are a source of quick heat. They are rather more expensive to buy and run.
- Wood-fired heaters are efficient, though not always convenient. Access to cheap fuel may be a problem.
- Electric heaters are convenient and fairly efficient if the unit is big enough. They are not cost effective though, especially fan-heaters.
