Heaven On Earth In Zambia

Zambia is home to the largest waterfall in the world, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, and commonly referred to as The Victoria Falls. This waterfall makes the Niagara falls look like a garden centre water feature, standing at the collossal height of a hundred and eleven metres, and measuring over a mile across. The torrent of water that plummets from this great height roars like a thousand angry lions, and sends spray so high into the air that the jets can be seen from a distance of over thirty kilometres away.

If you’re serious about extreme sports, then you’ll probably know all about Livingstone town and the surrounding area already. However, if you don’t, then you might be intrigued by the possibility of being able to do activities such as fishing, bungee jumping, micro-light and helicopter flights over the Victoria Falls, skiing, river boarding, 4x4 off road driving, abseiling, river safari, white water river-rafting, elephant-back safari, and much more, all set against an awe-inspiring backdrop.

The Zambezi River runs 3,540 kilometres from the Kalene Hills to the Indian Ocean, with over two thirds of it going through Zambia. The river encompasses the the peaceful and history-rich Lake Kariba, the Barote Flood Plain, site of the Lozi people’s exuberant annual Kuomboka ceremony, and the devastatingly deep Batoka Gorge. The Lower Zambezi is a naturalist’s dream, surrounded as it is by some of the most exotic wildlife anywhere in the world.

It’s not just the natural geography and wildlife that make Zambia a photographer’s dream, though! The Nchanga Open Pit, a massive 4,700km long, 2,400km wide, and 335m deep copper mine, is one of the largest of its type in the world, and can rightly claim to be one of the most spectacular man made edifices in the entire Southern Hemisphere.

Zambia can lay claim to having some of the largest and most spectacular areas of unspoiled wilderness anywhere in the world. All the zoos and safari parks in the world cannot compete with the natural wonders that are abundant in the wilderness of Zambia, which can boast 19 national parks and 34 big-game reserves that account for over 30% of the nation’s land mass. If you’ve ever wanted to see animals such as rhinos, lions, leopards, elephants, and giraffes living as nature intended, Zambia is a must-see. And that’s not all – with the naked eye alone you can watch herds of wildebeests migrate in Liuwa Park, huge crowds of Antelope in the Kafue Fats and Busanga plains and all manner of unique, exotic avian life, such as crested cranes, the rare shoebill stork, saddle-bill storks, egrets, wood ibis, and many more at the Bird Sanctuary in Lochinvar.
