Help For Children Who Have A Stammer

Realising and hearing that your son or daughter has a stammer can be very distressing for a parent. The majority of people have met, at some stage of their life, somebody who has suffered with this type of speech impediment and have seen just how much of a struggle the stammer can impact on one’s life. Any parent would not want their child to have to face these struggles in the future. The whole issue can become quite stressful and worrying as the parents attempt to find a solution.

With the birth of the internet finding information about seemingly any health related issue has become some what easier. Parents are likely to search on one of the major search engines such as Google for information about stammering, a cure for stammering or advice for people who stammer. This will enable the parents to read up on various different websites about this form of speech impediment and about the various therapies for stammering that are currently available.

A starting point in stammering treatments for many children is to attend speech and language therapy. In the United Kingdom this treatment is free via the National Health Service and is therefore definitely worth a try. The main problem with traditional speech therapy is the fact that the speech therapists do not actually believe that there is a cure for stammering therefore parents hoping for a “quick fix” are likely to be left disappointed.

There are now many alternative treatments for stammering to the traditional speech therapy route. These include one-to-one speech courses and group speech courses some of which are run by people who have previously had and overcome a stammer.

There are also a number of home-based self help products that are now available including audio books, e-books and DVD’s.
