Helping Children Get Fit - The Dos And Don'ts

Children are meant to get lots of exercise but our modern world is making it tougher and tougher for them to do so. But rather than sitting back and accepting this negative trend, we as parents can do something about it.

Does your child spend hours playing video games, surfing the web or watching TV programmes?

Does your child get a lift to a school that's within walking distance?

Does your child spend most of their school lunchtimes indoors, even if the weather's dry?

Does your work schedule stop you from playing with your children?

If the answer to any of these is yes, then there's a chance your child isn't getting anywhere near the exercise they need to remain fit and healthy. However, there are some very simple things that can be done to help them.

Dos

Do take them to see a live sporting event - they'll probably love it and it may spark a new passion in them to try the sport for themselves.

Do introduce them to alternative sports and activities - have you thought about martial arts, kite flying, surfing, snowboarding or ultimate frisby?!

Do take them to a family-friendly gym - there are many about and they have everything your child needs to get exercise and have a great time.

Don'ts

Don't drive them to a walkable school - if the school is only a few minutes walk, then, whether it's with you or in a group of friends, don't make them lazy by dropping them off by car.

Don't switch the TV on when you get in - if you do it, your child will do it too. Believe it or not, and even if you're child would never admit it, you're a role model for them. If you act lazily, they'll do exactly the same.

Don't leave them to it - if they're playing in the back garden, why not join in. Pick up a cricket bat and let them bowl at you, or you bowl at them; go in goal and let them take shots; take them to park and play rugby... whatever they enjoy doing, make sure you're a part of it.
