As with any STD it is very important to be tested. The most common test for herpes is a blood test. This test is safe, fast and reliable and can differentiate between herpes simplex 1 and herpes simplex 2. The best way to prevent herpes is to abstain from having sex. Asking teens to put an end to sexual behavior once it has begun is a task of high order but it is possible.

Other than abstinence, sex with condoms can cut infection rates dramatically. Any teen who feels they may be infected with herpes should be tested for the virus—as well as other STDs.
