High School Coursework: A Synopsis Of Coursework Required For A High School Diploma
Main Courses: All high schools have a set of core courses that students must complete in order to graduate. Students must take the school coursework, so they have a well-rounded education and gain of understanding of multiple subjects. With this knowledge, students can join the workforce or prepare to attend a higher education institution. The exact courses vary from state to state. Generally speaking, most students have to complete the following requirements: • 3-4 Courses of English • 2-4 Courses of Math • 2-3 Courses of Science • 3 Courses in Social Studies • 2 Courses in Physical Education • 1-3 Courses of a Foreign Language Elective Courses: Elective courses are courses that students can choose to take. Each high school has a different number of elective courses for students to take. When students are choosing electives, the type of electives depends on the post-high school plans. If students are interested in attending a university or college, they may want to check what the admission requirements are. Many universities and colleges want students to take more than the minimum required English, math, science, social studies, and foreign language classes. Therefore, students will use their electives to fulfill these requirements. If students are entering careers after high school, they may want to take more career-oriented elective courses. Advanced Placement (AP) Courses: Advanced placement courses are advanced courses that students can take on subjects such as English, math, science, social science, and foreign language. These courses are meant to demonstrate that students can complete high school coursework comparable to that done in a freshmen level college class. Often, colleges and universities will give students college-level credit if they complete the course and pass the advanced placement exam distributed by College Board. Students are not required to take these courses. However, they are a good option for college bound students.
