Highlights Of The Georgia Renaissance Festival

The Georgia Renaissance Festival is one of the most popular spring festivals in the Atlanta area. The festival, which is held over eight weekends plus Memorial Day, provides a full day of fun for the entire family. Festival attendees can go back in time and experience a medieval European country fair. King Henry and his royal court invite visitors to join them for the games and entertainment.

A cast of more than 1,000 costumed actors portray peasants, performers, and nobility from the era. Street performers engage the crowds. A wide variety of entertainment takes place on the festival’s ten stages. There are jugglers, acrobats, dancers, and musicians playing traditional instruments. Attendees may enjoy a magician, a firewalker, a hypnotist, a trapeze show, or one of the comedy shows. The Birds of Prey demonstration is always a crowd pleaser. The show features owls, hawks, and eagles that demonstrate their flight skills. Entertainment new to the 2011 schedule is Tartanic, a group specializing in Celtic music and dancing, and the Filthy Rotten Scoundrels Mud Show, which will entertain visitors of all ages.

The Georgia Renaissance Festival has rides and games for all ages. Kids may enjoy the Corkscrew Slide, the Junior Joust, and the Barrel O’Bedlam. Older attendees may like the Drench-a-Wench, the Torture Museum, the maze, or darts. Games and ride attractions are priced separately from $1 to $5 each.

Highlights for many people attending the Renaissance festival are the jousting matches. The main one each day is preceded by a parade to the Jousting Arena. Knights in armor mount their horses and take turns trying to knock the opponents off their horses. Visitors cheer for their favorite knights.

Shopping is a big draw for some attendees. The World Bazaar artist market features 150 artisans that demonstrate their skills and sell their wares. Festival goers will be able to see crafts such as spinning, weaving, glass blowing, and leatherworking.

Food at the Georgia Renaissance Festival is not your typical festival fare. The giant turkey legs are very popular. Many people look forward to sampling something unusual such as bangers and mash, meat pies, and fish and chips. Adult beverages are available for purchase.

The 2011 Georgia Renaissance Festival is scheduled for Saturdays and Sundays from April 16 to June 5. Gates open at 10:30am and close at 6pm. The festival site is located just eight miles southwest of the Atlanta airport in Fairburn, Georgia. Visitors should use Exit 61 off I-85, and travel two miles on Highway 74/Senoia Road. Admission is $19.95 for adults, $17.95 for seniors, and $8.95 for ages 6-12. Children under age 5 are free. Festival admission includes free parking, all entertainment shows including jousting, the children’s playground, and the petting zoo.
