There are times when hiring a science tutor can be helpful to boost a student's grades and confidence. Science and math can be especially tough subjects for kids and once they get behind, it's hard to catch up. Not only that, they may begin to feel like they're not smart or even a failure. They may begin to hate the subjects they're having difficulty with. Before the curtain of doom falls on difficult school subjects, parents can try various tactics to boost grades, self esteem and enthusiasm. Here are some things to think about:

- Hiring a tutor: Engaging a highly qualified tutor to come to your house or that you transport your offspring to weekly can be a great idea. In today's schools, it's often hard to give the individual attention that students sometimes need. Parents aren't always well versed in certain subjects, either. Even if moms and dads were straight A+ students, yesterday's methodology isn't current enough to pass today's courses. It's important to get word-of-mouth references for the tutors that you hire. You want someone with a solid track record and experience. Sometimes individuals who used to be teachers just want to work part-time and are eager to keep their skills up to date through tutoring.

- Test scores: Every course has exams to pass in order to get through the class with flying colors. There are also tests that the schools and districts give in order to demonstrate their teachers' effectiveness. These are prepped for on a regular basis and must be successfully completed in order for kids to graduate from high school. SAT tests and other college entrance tests are another area where tutoring can help to bring a struggling teen up to the top of the class.

- Science centers as enrichment: Academics aren't everything when it comes to improving kids' interest and marks in scientific subjects.
