Hiring A Home Care Provider
1. Find a provider that is associated with a reputable agency or association; this can provide safeguards in case something goes wrong with the relationship 2. Home care giving agencies should be licensed, bonded, and insured; all associates of the agency should be professional and ethical 3. Discuss all financial aspects up front to make sure that the patient can afford the care and will not be surprised by unexpected costs; check to make sure that the patient’s insurance, including Medicare if applicable, is compatible with the providing agency. In addition to choosing some type of agency or provider, the individual home caregivers need to be chosen carefully to make sure they are a good fit for the needs of the patient. Some additional requirements include: 1. Interviewing the candidate to see their personality and whether they get along with the patient 2. Discuss any physical requirements of the job such as lifting, cleaning, or driving; make sure they have a valid driver’s license if driving is part of the job 3. Check any references provided by the caregiver 4. Discuss any boundaries of the job, such as whether the caregiver may make personal calls or have personal visits while working at the patient’s house 5. Every patient is different; determine whether the caregiver can handle any specific issues with the patient such as dementia, diabetes, or other concerns. It may be tempting to make all decisions for the patient, especially if their mental capacities are diminished, but it is important for the patient to feel like they are a part of the hiring process.
