After two years or so meditating, I had seen a lot of benefits. I was sleeping better, was more relaxed, and dealt with stress and difficult situations much easier. But I felt as if my progress was stagnating. This is why I decided to investigate one of the binaural beat programs that everyone had been talking about. Holosync, made by Centerpointe Research Institute, seemed to be the most popular, so I ordered their Awakening Prologue Cds to give it a try. I wanted to see if it could improve or replace the meditation practice I already was doing, and whether it offered the same benefits. Meditation is becoming more and more talked about these days in the news. People generally seem to be investigating more holistic ways to deal with health problems because they are tired of just taking more pills. Meditation really does provide the benefits that people are claiming (except for the ones about mind reading and levitation !!). It reduces stress, helps with sleeping, improves concentration, and eventually helps people work through some of their deep issues. It certainly has changed my life. But it is also very hard!! Sitting for up to an hour concentrating is very difficult, and the REAL benefits take a long time to show up, because you have to learn HOW to meditate first. Meditation is a skill in itself and at least for me, it took a long time to figure out how to get my mind to enter into a relaxed state without just falling asleep or daydreaming. I have read that meditation offers more benefits the deeper one can relax. After two years I could go into what I thought was deep relaxation, and occasionally I REALLY got it. I would feel like I was floating, and sensations of relaxation and well-being would flow through my body. When I finished I would feel great. The problem is that this didn’t happen all the time. Sometimes I would just sit around for a half hour trying to relax, or even cut my session short. If you haven’t heard of binaural beats before, the basic idea is as follows. Your brain waves have frequencies that they go through during the day. Gamma waves are associated with higher mental activity, problem solving, and fear. Beta waves are associated with anxiety, arousal, and busy thinking. Alpha waves are associated with waking relaxation, pre-sleep, and drowsiness. Theta waves are associated with dreams, deep meditation, and REM sleep. Delta waves are associated with deep dreamless sleep, and loss of body awareness. Binaural beats are beats of two different frequencies that are played separately in each ear. Since the two beats are different, the brain tries to make up the difference by creating a frequency of brainwaves that is equal to the difference between the two frequencies played in each ear. Using this method, Holosync claims to be able to entrain your brainwaves, moving them down to the relaxing Theta and Delta levels. After trying the Holosync binaural beat CD for a few weeks, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Listening to the gentle sound of bells and rain quickly brought me down much quicker and deeper into a meditative state. I went deeper into meditation and relaxed much more than I ever had before. I felt all kinds of crazy warm sensations running through my body. I have to say that the depth of my meditation before just couldn’t compare. When I was finished, I felt the same as if I had just finished a really positive meditation session. After some time using the Holosync binaural beats, I feel that they deliver. I’m not ready to give up on my traditional meditation practice just yet, but I’m convinced that Holosync offers a lot of benefits, and it seems to be much easier than traditional meditation as well as being more effective.
