Holy Hindu Songs And Poems

The cultural significance associated with religious songs by any follower of Hinduism is immense. Most of these poems are sung on particular events or as an everyday routine while there are others that can be recited or heard as per the wishes of the person. The first poem that comes to your mind when thinking of the devotional Hindu music is Tulsidas' 'Hanuman Chalisa' that is a religious poem devoted to the god Hanuman.

Hanuman Chalisa is a popular religious poem that has become widely well known among present day Hindus. Every Tuesday and sometimes on other days of the week, a lot of Hindus chant it in praise of Hanuman.

Mirabai's bhajans also have a great reverence in holy Hindu poetry. Dedication and emotions are visible in these bhajans which are akin to poems. These songs from the bhakti era are devoted to the Hindu god Shri Krishna.

Mirabai's poetry puts love for Krishna above everything else in life. Her poem-songs depict Krishna sometimes as a spouse and at other times as a lover. They are a mirror to Mirabai's passionate wish to unite with her Lord Krishna. Her poems are thus both spiritual and devotional in their theme and tone.

"Sur Sagar" Ocean of Melody created by Surdas also deserves special mention. Surdas is well known for this immortal work, which is a compendium of 100,000 poetic pieces. Sadly just about 8,000 of them have been documented.

Surdas' music talks about the adventures and life of the Hindu God Krishna and is an expression of the devotion of the poet. They often talk about the holy union of the lovers Radha and Krishna and the heavenly dances they indulged in called Lilas. A description of sacred poetry in Hindu religion requires a special discussion of the Bijak or Seedling that was a compilation of chants by Kabir on the ideology of the unity of all religions and gods.

The poems are full of ideas of atman, brahman and karma, and have a strong bhakti undertone. They recommend that everyone must look beyond their sacred texts and teachings in order to attain the unity or ekatwa with the God.
