Home Based Business Is The Best

Let's face it: dividing your time between your family and growing a business or a lucrative profession is a full time job. Schedules are just difficult to follow and can often overlap. Unless you are an employee, you cannot say that from 8PM to 6AM I will attend to family matters. It just doesn't work that way.

So the best way to enjoy your family and having a hefty income is to engage in a home based business, not just an ordinary "mom & pop" or "sari-sari" store but an internet business to be specific, wherein your gateway is the whole world. But this is not going to be a walk in the park. It's going to be VERY HARD if you're a newbie like me.

Since you made the decision to be home-based, you just have to be prepared for the worst. You will find yourself challenged by one way or the other, but that's part of the game. Conflicts with the wife and kids are common because the work place is just a few steps away from the family space. With no receptionist or "cordon sanitaire" to block the way, the easy accessibility of other family members to your work area can become a nightmare especially if you are faced with tremendous learning curve pressures.

Your Family

Every home based entrepreneur should first and foremost understand that it is easier to run a home-based business than it is to run a traditional businesss where you are continually emphasizing your boundaries.
Remember, one of the biggest advantages to home employment is the opportunity to spend more time with the family. As the work-at-home parent dedicate more time to the business, particularly during the crucial start-up phase, it can have negative implications like little amount of money coming in to the business. On the positive side, a hardworking parent can send positive signals to the children. Children who are raised by entrepreneurs do tend to become entrepreneurs themselves.
If you feel you can teach your family into parts of your business, by all means, do so. It might help them to better understand your needs and constraints. It is one thing for your spouse or children to see you completely stressed out; it's quite another for them to be see you super elated when that high-volume order comes. Especially for children, it is a good idea to demonstrate your commitment to your work. It's quite practical to enlist the help of those other capable adults because they can take some of the burdens of the business off your shoulders.

Working from Home. When Do You Stop?

One of the most common complaints against home-based entrepreneurs is that they sometimes never know when to stop. It's actually happening to me. Even before eating my breakfast, I usually check the computer for e-mails, opt-in visitors and other stuffs. After lunch and dinner, I will rush again to the computer to check emails or perform a hundred other business-related tasks, instead of interacting with the rest of the family members. Scenarios like these could lead to resentments among family members. Remember, you need your family's support, even it may seem as if your family has no idea what pressures you're facing. There are countless ways for families to resolve this problem.

First, allot a reasonable working hours to the business, and allow the business to develop at a reasonable pace. You would not want to reach the situation when you would be made to choose between your business and your family. In my case it's no work during Saturdays and Sundays. During weekdays, I manage to squeeze two mornings for golf. In that way, I could say that I am leading a balanced life. Do what your wife likes doing most like accompanying her to the malls (I hate going to malls) or watch movies.

Another solution: compromise with your family to allow you to work for long hours for the first few months during your start-up phase and then reducing it as your business becomes more stable.

This problem should never be ignored. If you ignore the situation, you may cause larger problems in your business and your family, or worse, for both. Scheduling your time is the best way to make sure everything gets done. There is no better way than having your cake and eating it too.
