Home Based Medical Transcription: Making It Work For You

Many people want to have a home based medical transcription business, but are completely unaware of the challenges that this entails. This article will outline some of the inner strengths a medical transcriptionist must have in order to successfully work at home.

Passion – Passion is required in this field because that is what drives good medical transcriptionists to go beyond the normal requirements and become great medical transcriptionists. If you love medical terminology, have a fascination about the human body, its anatomy and how disease processes develop, this will drive you to learn more every day in your pursuit to become a medical language specialist.

Focus – This cannot be emphasized enough. There are so many daily distractions that can cheat you out of time, especially if you are running a home based medical transcription business. When starting, set boundaries with friends and family. Put a note on the door: Working – Do Not Disturb. If friends call, politely tell them what your work hours are and that you will be happy to call them back later.

Commitment – The best medical transcriptionists have a commitment to excellence and providing the best service to clients all the time. Just think about it like this: You awaken with a headache, body aches, and a fever. It would be easy just to go back to sleep but you realize that other people are depending on your work. So you drag yourself out of bed and despite feeling ill, you work and are able to produce your medical reports and deliver them to the medical office on time. That is commitment.

Dedication – The personal dedication one has in providing the best home based medical transcription is usually transparent to those whose reports you transcribe. For example, you may get a call at 3:30 p.m. from a frantic client who needs a STAT medical report. You realize this is a time you can show your client how invaluable you are by coming to their rescue. And you do; you transcribe the medical report and get it back to the office by 5:30 p.m. Then you return to your regular medical transcription workload, and continue to work during the evening to get it done on a timely basis.

Discipline – Setting up a work schedule and sticking to it is vital to your success. Are you a morning person or do you do better working in the afternoon? One MT I know starts at 2:30 in the morning, finishes her work by 10 a.m., and then rides horses in the afternoon.

Ability to Interact Well With Others – Even though you may be working at home, you should not allow yourself to be isolated. There will be times when you need help from other home based medical transcription specialists. So be sure to establish positive relationships with people, help them out when you can, and contact them when you need help with dictation or other problems, such as how to deal with difficult doctors/clients.
