Home Content Insurance Basics

Many people don't bother to insure the contents of their home, thinking that they are not worth all that much. What you should consider is the cost of replacing all your stuff should you lose it in a fire or if it was stolen. While it may not have seemed to cost much when you bought it a piece at a time, to replace it all at once would cost quite a lot. So walk through each room and itemise what you have - it might surprise you.

Taking photographs of your belongings to put with the inventory is a good idea, but this should be stored outside the home in case of fire or flood. When you purchase insurance, you may need to specify things that are of more value than normal. If you own an expensive Persian rug, it would cost more to replace than normal carpet. You may even need to insure some things separately.

Most insurance policies don't cover those things that can be taken - and lost - outside the home such as laptops and mobile phones. They may need to be specified or insured separately. And if you share a home with other relatives, then their valuables are usually not included in your insurance policy, so they will need their own.
