Home Remedies For The Cure Of Anaemia

Anaemia (Pandu Roga)

Anaemia is the lack of red blood corpuscles and haemoglohin in the blood. It is also called Pandurog in Ayurveda.

Causes

Anaemia may be caused due to loss of blood during -

Excessive menstruation

Injury

Childbirth

Bleeding from the gastro-intestinal tract

Diseases like purpura and haemophilia

Due to infections, toxins and drugs, formation of defective blood.

Inadequate intake of iron

Symptoms

Some of the symptoms are as follow -

The pallor of the skin

Weakness and giddiness

The breathing is shallow

Rapid pulse

Low blood pressure

Sore tongue

Brittle fingernails

If the disease is ignored, it may turn into pernicious anaemia which is more difficult to cure. In some severe cases, the patient may have to be given a blood transfusion to make up the loss of blood, as happens in traumas like severe haemorrhage due to injury or bursting of an ulcer in the abdominal region.

Ayurvedic Remedies

Punarnavadi Mandura or Punarnava Mandura are the medicines of choice. One gram of Mandura should be given with honey four times a day. For children, the dose can be suitably reduced. The main ingredient of the drug is punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa) which has rejuvenating qualities. If given to healthy persons, it acts as an elixir.

Vyoshadi Ghrita, Phatrikadi Kashaya, Pandu Panchanana Rasa and Lauhasava are some of the other drugs and standard Ayurvedic preparations useful in anaemia.

Fresh liver of goat lightly cooked, and fresh blood of goat or rabbit can immediately help fight the severity of anaemia.

Fruit juice, milk, meat soup, green vegetables, and light foods free from fats and sour substances are recommended for a patient suffering from anaemia. Sweet mango is like nectar for such a patient.

If the patient is constipated, purgatives are indicated because anaemia is born of pitta which can be corrected through purgation. Tripha water (the three myrobalans soaked in water) is the best remedy for such constipation.

Since beetroot is rich in iron it helps in enhancing the quantity of blood in the system. If one takes adequate amount of chukandar (beetroot) in salad or as vegetable this trouble gets cured in about a month. Having lemon juice drenched beetroot pieces as the first thing in morning is an ideal way of checking out the blood in body. Especially the ladies must consume beetroot in this manner during their periods.

Home Remedies

Soak 10-12 currants (munakkas) in water overnight. Remove seeds and eat them. Have for 2-4 weeks.

Have spinach juice of 125 gm. spinach everyday, for 2-3 weeks.

Foods rich in iron-honey, almonds, bananas, apricot (khubani), raisins (kishmish), fenugreek or salad leaves, onion, spinach (paalak), grapes, tomatoes, carrots, gooseberry (amla), beetroots (chukander), apples, pomegranate (anaar). Have plenty of them if you are anemic.

Carrot is a very rich source of iron and if taken raw with a few pieces of chukander (beetroot) it is certain to remove this trouble. Have fresh carrots and beetroot, liberally sprinkled over with lemon juice and munch your way to pink state of health. Vitamin Aand C would not only keep your body strong but your blood red without any impurity. This is the surest cure of anaemia.

Mix 1 tablespoon amla juice mashed with a ripe banana and eat 2-3 times a day.

Have a ripe banana with 1 tablespoon honey, 1-2 times a day.

Take freshly prepared apple juice an hour before meals or just before retiring for the night. For proper absorption of the juice, remember the stomach should be relatively empty when you have juice and also do not take anything for about half an hour after the juice .

Avoid drinking tea and coffee immediately after meals as the tannin present in these interferes in the absorption of iron from food.
