Home Security - Keep Your Family Safe

Don't overlook your home security in the hurry to prepare for your vacation. Crime statistics show that every hour in the US 240 homes are burglarized. Most of these crimes happen when no one is home. Many of them could be prevented if the homeowner had a home security system installed.
One of the easiest and effective courses of action that instantly boosts the security of your home and family is to install a home security alarm and surveillance camera. Home security monitoring options are available with a lot of these home security devices. Additional preventative measures do need to be put into practice as the installation of these products does not ensure you'll be exempt from trouble. Less expensive options include installing motion sensor lighting around your home. While external security is great, there is a lot you can do to increase security inside of your home. After checking the locks on all doors and windows, replace any that are deficient. Don't think it won't happen at my home, it does and it will.
Glass sliding doors on your patio or porch are just what a burglar needs for easy access. Secure your door; install a blocking device, like a "Charlie bar" or something similar. This will prevent the door from sliding open easily. At least block the track with something heavy, like a steel rod or wooden pole; this will keep it from being moved easily.
It is wise to use a home safe whenever possible. Keep items such as extra keys, important personal documents and identity information in it. Those who don't own a home safe may want to rent a safety deposit box at a bank. If you live in a high crime area you should definitely consider doing this. It will help protect your valuables.
You can make your home more secure and safe from intruders if you make your home look like someone is in it. One way to do this is to use timers to turn room lights on at various times of the day. Use them in a variety of room in your home.
There are other precautions you can take, such as stopping delivery of the mail and the newspaper. If you have two cars, park one in the driveway; you can also ask a neighbor to park there during your absence. Find a trusted neighbor or relative, give him a key, and have him check on the house while you're gone. And don't leave an away message announcing your absence to the world.
Ensure all outbuildings are secure, making sure any tools in your garage that could be used to gain access are under lock and key. No matter what steps and security measures you take your home will never be 100% secure. But the the more difficult you make it for a burglar to gain entry the stronger your home security will be.
