FBI statistics from 2004 show the value of goods stolen in burglaries to be on average about $1600. For the 2.143 million burglaries that is $34,288,000. Why so much? Do you suppose it has anything to do with the fact that it is so easy to do? Think about this folks. With just a little homework-called "casing" the neighborhood these crooks can: • Pick out a home that looks affluent. • Pick out a home with cover so they can conceal themselves. • Pick out a home that has no signage about alarms, dogs or security systems. Most burglars, probably the vast majority, do their work during the day when the occupants are not home. So once they have a target, and believe me they have plenty to choose from, the hard part is over. Breaking in is a piece of cake. Forced entry is usually not even required. Over 33% of burglaries happen thru open doors and windows. How much easier can we make it for them? Trust me when I tell you that burglars are not all that much different than you and I in that they choose the easiest course. So if there is any 'sign' of a hard time they'll move onto another target. When these guys case a neighborhood, anything that looks like a hard time like a sign for a security company, an NRA sign, a sign 'Beware of Dog' or basically anything warning of an obstacle including home security window stickers sends them looking elsewhere-exactly what you want.
