Home Security Tips For Vacation-bound New Yorkers

Everyone loves living in the city--until it's the middle of a heat wave. Then, whether your big city is Buffalo or Manhattan, people start to get a bit anxious, often wanting to go somewhere that's a bit more rustic and natural than the concrete jungle. Sometimes, this means being able to jet off for entire weeks at a time, but more often than not, it means simple day trips. Maybe visiting your in-laws upstate, or getting together with some work friends to go to someone's cabin for the hottest weekend of the summer. No matter what your plans happen to be, even if it's just a simple day trip to the beach or even the Jersey shore, it's definitely worthwhile to temper the season with at least a couple vacations.

The only trouble is that summertime means more of a focus on your home security, as countless robbers don't quite have time for that day off that you do. This is due in part to the fact that the economy is still on its never-ending see-saw journey, and is also because of the inevitable rules of the seasons. When criminals know that people are going to be hitting the road--like for a three-day weekend--they step up their game as far as breaking and entering is concerned. And this means that you, whether living in a townhouse, apartment, or condo, need to be sure that you have taken the right steps to keep your property safe and secure.

The first step that is absolutely essential is the installation of a solid home alarm system. This doesn't mean spending a ton of money on something that is top-of-the-line but poorly suited for your needs. It just means investing in a little bit of assistance, in something that can get the job done properly for you. That, after all, takes some of the stress away from you and your doorman, and ensures that something extra is looking out for your household.

But it can't just be about a home alarm system, either. Be sure that you have a go-to checklist that you complete every single time you are heading off for the weekend. On it, keep those regular tasks that you complete every time you are going to be gone for awhile. Obviously, shut and lock all of the windows, lock the door, be sure to use the deadbolt, turn off the stove, etc. But when you know you're going to be gone for a bit longer, step up your game a little. Be sure that you are also moving window air-conditioning units, as these make it a lot easier to break into apartments. Try to leave more lights on. Consider leaving a television set or radio on for noise. All of those small steps can make all the difference, especially if you're going to be out of town for longer than just the three-day weekend.

It might be tempting to jet off for the weekend without double-checking all of those smaller home security matters, but it's definitely not the smart move of a renter or homeowner. After all, just 15 extra minutes making sure that your space is as safe as it can be can save you hours of stress later down the line, if you are the successful target of a well-organized robber.
