For people who own vacation homes that they only use themselves, security is a much bigger deal. If your second home is located somewhere that's a known hot seasonal hot spot, people might be waiting until the off-season comes and the crowds disperse to break into your home. Anticipate this by doing a thorough lock-down of the entire place each time you leave. Be sure to place broom handles or long sticks in any sliding doors or windows so that a thief cannot force them open.

For extra home security, consider getting the window glass reinforced or double-paneled, so that it's break-resistant. If you happen to have a cellar or basement on your vacation home, get bars put on the windows. A ground-level window is like a flashing red light that says "easy entry" to many burglars, and taking care of it is a huge step towards securing your home.

Not all vacation homes are just used by the owners, though. Those who are renting their properties out to others should make sure they have a good working relationship with someone in charge of managing the property if it's part of a community or group. Otherwise, if you are in charge of screening the people interested in renting, make sure that you don't furnish your vacation home with anything you'd be devastated about finding missing. People are known to do very rude things, and destroying your carpet or taking a piece of art is not unheard of.

But even if you're renting it out, this is still your vacation home, too. If you do have valuables you need to keep there, make sure there is a safe or securely locked closet that guests won't have any access to, and keep things of value there. And of course, always run background checks on renters, especially if your property is in a remote location. These important steps in home security can save you a great deal of time and money in repairs and replacements. Just because you want to rent your property out doesn't mean that everyone who is interested is a good fit. Use your instinct and if you think something's not quite right, refuse to rent to the person who made you feel that way.

It may be a little more costly than just locking up tight and securing your valuables, but the indisputable most important part of your vacation property is the home itself. Consider going the extra mile and getting any kind of house alarm installed. With a variety of types to choose from, you could be thousands of miles away and still sleep easy knowing that if someone broke in while you were far away, that the police would still be dispatched. With the right kind of system, the whole mess could already be taken care of before they even call you to let you know what went down in the first place.
